St Kessog’s Church, Callander

Project Overview
Richardson & Starling recently completed an extensive refurbishment project at St Kessog’s Church in Callander, where widespread dry and wet rot had caused significant damage to the ceiling and surrounding structure. The building had lain empty for a number of years, allowing the decay to spread into the lath and plaster and leaving the interior in poor condition.
Challenges Identified
Our inspection confirmed that the ceiling timbers, lath and plaster, and surrounding walls had been severely compromised by both wet and dry rot. The deterioration posed a major challenge not only to the structural integrity of the building but also to the restoration of its architectural features, including archways and ceiling finishes.
Our Solution
To restore the church and safeguard its structure, we carried out a full programme of timber and plaster repairs:
-
Removed all decayed timbers and treated the affected walls to prevent further fungal growth.
-
Reframed the internal walls and carefully reinstated the original archways.
-
Replaced the ceiling timbers and installed new beams to support the structure.
-
Installed new lining boards, which were stained to provide a high-quality finish sympathetic to the building’s character.
Benefits to the Client
The completed works revitalised the interior of St Kessog’s Church, transforming an area heavily affected by rot into a structurally sound and visually restored space. By addressing the root causes of decay and replacing key structural elements, the project has ensured the building is protected for the future, while preserving its architectural character.
