External New Build Waterproofing

New build waterproofing systems that are applied to the outside face of the external walls and below the base slab are designed to create a barrier that stops groundwater from entering the building. British waterproofing standard 8102:2009 classes this type of waterproofing as a ‘Type A’. For full protection this should be coupled with an internal waterproofing application to create a complete waterproof system for habitable areas. There are various types of waterproofing systems that can be used and the correct system will be specified once the project requirements are understood.

Internal New Build Waterproofing

Waterproofing the inside of the property can be done using various systems and is dependent on the site conditions and the proposed use of the property area to be waterproofed. “Type A” waterproofing systems which are like the ones used externally can be applied direct to the walls. In other cases when the building is already completed or the access to external face of the new build wall is restricted a “Type C” waterproofing system is the most appropriate solution. This type of waterproofing system works by collecting water using waterproofing membranes and recessed channels which manage the water into a sump or an existing drain. This type of system is called a water management system as it collects the water that penetrates the basement and pumps it out with no water breaching the waterproof membrane fitted to walls and floor keeping the living area dry.
