What Causes Rising Damp?

Rising damp is dampness which occurs when moisture rises up through masonry or brick walls from the ground. Rising damp showcases the damaging ability of a liquid to flow upwards in narrow spaces defying gravity. Mortar and bricks can be very porous and contain countless capillaries which water can rise through, causing your wall to act like a sponge.

When properties are initially built, a rising damp barrier will be installed as a damp-proof course. The damp proof course may consist of non-absorbent, water-resistant materials such as slate, bitumen and plastic. This is an integral part of the construction of your home. However, incorrect installation or damage to the damp proof course tends to result in rising damp. If you do not have a damp-proof course in your house then there is nothing to protect water from travelling up your walls.

How To Identify Rising Damp

Signs of Rising Damp:

    • Dark damp patches on walls
    • Damp musty smells
    • Colder temperature at the lower part of the wall
    • Visible rotting of floor timber
    • Wrinkled or crumbling plaster
    • Tidemark looking stains
    • Visible salt deposits
    • Discolouration of plaster

It is important to note that rising damp can only occur on ground floor levels. Moisture from exterior soils is being drawn up the walls and causing the rising damp problem. If the damp problem you have identified is on the first floor or above it is likely you are suffering from condensation or penetrating damp problem.

Rising Damp Treatment & Repairs

We can send out specialists to your home to extensively survey the affected area to ensure an accurate diagnosis of the source of your rising damp problem. Misdiagnosis at this stage can hugely impact the effectiveness of any provided solution and greatly extend the amount of time required to resolve the issue. Reach out to our Inverness team today who will provide an accurate diagnosis before providing the most efficient solution.

What our specialist will do:

    • Carry out an extensive survey of the affected area to identify the type of damp problem
    • Locate the source of your problem (How the water is getting into your walls)
    • Present you with an easily understandable survey report
    • Provide the most appropriate treatment solution

After our specialists have sufficiently analysed your situation, they will then carry out the remedial work necessary to solve your rising damp issue. Obviously dependent on the property construction and site conditions, our specialists will either fix the existing damp proof course or install an entirely new system. A chemical damp proof course is an efficient technique to deal with damp in walls. The system consists of a continuous unbroken layer of waterproofing material which acts as a prevention barrier stopping dampness from rising up the wall from the ground.

Standard rising damp treatment procedures involve drilling numerous holes in an affected wall and injecting waterproofing material through these holes. Damp plasterwork will be stripped in order to remove all salt contaminated areas which we will replace with a cavity wall membrane system before re-plastering. This may come across as a little daunting, but don’t worry our specialists will inform you of what treatment solution is most appropriate for your situation.
